Translation and Cultural Diplomacy

Résumé de la conférence prononcée par Luise von Flotow (Directrice intérimaire, École de traduction et d'interprétation) le 5 février 2007.

Cultural diplomacy has become an important topic in the early 21st century as nations seek ways to distinguish themselves, draw attention to their finer points and, as a result, bolster their images, establish and maintain allies, and sell goods. Literary translation plays into this so-called "soft policy" in interesting ways, and plays itself out in other ways. My talk will discuss cultural policy as a phenomenon of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, examine some of the theoretical aspects underlying it, explore its importance for translation, and then, with reference to a recent research project on Canadian writing in German translation, discuss results and effects.
