Titre: Patterns and gaps in studies of second dialect acquisition
Résumé:
This talk reviews a set of studies on dialect contact, with a focus on Brazilian Portuguese, and aims to highlight both recurrent findings and open questions in the literature. It presents the construction of a speech corpus composed of 224 speakers from Northeastern Brazil who migrated to the southeastern state of São Paulo, and outlines a series of comparative analyses carried out on phonetic, morphological, morphosyntactic, and lexical variables. Across these different linguistic domains, the analyses reveal robust effects of social and biographical factors such as Gender, Age of Arrival, and Length of Residence. At the same time, there have been few studies concerning the role of internal linguistic factors, as well as limited empirical attention to how speakers’ attitudes, identities, and the social meanings associated with linguistic forms shape processes of second dialect acquisition.
